Below is a document containing the various rules and guidelines for the Max Mode List. If you have any questions or requests about the rules, please let a staff member know via the discord server or Request Changes form.

1. List Placements

1.1. List Definitions

  • The MAIN LIST is the PRIMARY list created by the Max Mode List team. The main determining factor for how high a placement is on this list is how much skill is required to overcome the challenge (ex. a skill-based mode). Luck/RNG, time required to learn modes, and time to build skill are also taken into account, however the main focus of this list is to rank based on skill. This list also restricts the amount of modes from the same game to five.
  • The UNLIMITED LIST is the SECONDARY list created by the Max Mode List team. Determining factors for placements are more balanced; a blend of both SKILL and RNG. The main focus of this list is to rank modes based on all factors taken into account equally. This list is also more lenient and unfiltered compared to the Main List, allowing for a larger variety and amount of modes to be placed.

1.2. Ranking System

  • There is no direct rating system for FNaF Max Modes, nor are there classifications of them. Therefore, we have outlined a definition of what we consider a Max Mode to be.
  • We consider a “Max Mode” to be ANY mode that is the HARDEST possible mode/night in a FNaF game or FNaF fan-game. A Max Mode must also NOT be a part of the main campaign of the game, such as the main 5 nights of a game (ex. the Final Nights games aren't allowed as they all end at Night 5). A main campaign is considered all gameplay that takes place before the credits or ending is shown in a game.

1.3. Mode Eligibility

  • The three different classifications of Max Modes that are able to be ranked on the Main List include:
    • The default/base Max Mode, which is traditionally all characters active on their hardest preset difficulty setting.
    • The Max Mode with all in-game challenges activated alongside all characters active on their hardest preset difficulty setting (ex: True Nightmare All Challenges)
    • An Alternate Mode, which can either be a special or secret night from a given game (ex: SR’s Night).
  • Any given FNAF game, fangame, or mod accepted onto the list can have up to 5 of its Max Modes placed on the Main List, and a nearly infinite amount placed on the Unlimited List.
  • If a game has multiple Pre-Patch versions that are harder than the most recent versions, the most played/popular Pre-Patch will be ranked.
  • Max Modes that don’t give an in game reward can still be ranked, and can be placed on both lists.
  • Max Modes that are found on any site that is free and safe to access, such as Steam, Game Jolt, ROBLOX, and others are allowed on the list. Please check in with the list team if you have a question about a game, site, or services safety.
  • Max Modes that require the player to pay money to access that aren’t officially licensed or part of the fanverse will not be ranked.
  • The Maxmodelist allows games with PG and PG-13 content, in addition to some graphic content, especially due to FNaF’s nature of being a horror game series. If a game crosses a rating line in a MAJOR way, then it will be removed from the list.
  • If a game does not meet our standard of quality or can be easily broken and manipulated, then we will reject the game.
  • Fangames that feature sexual and otherwise promiscuous content will not be placed on either list.
  • UL ONLY: Some modes may be created as self-imposed challenges. Self-imposed challenges are something that YOU the player chooses to do as a challenge in addition to the already pre-existing coded challenges in a game, unless a game purposefully allows or rewards it. Self-imposed challenges are not allowed on the Main List, as they are not physical challenges coded into the game (ex. 50/20 NDC wouldn’t count since the challenge occurs within the night, but 50/20 Deluxe NDC would count). Up to 2 self-imposed challenges are allowed on the Unlimited List per game.

1.4. Ranking Guidelines

  • A mode must have been beaten by at least one person with video proof, on either YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, BiliBili, BitChute, or Rumble, in order to be placed on the list.
  • Any and all modes are subject to changes in placement, name, and statistics at any time if deemed necessary. These changes are made only after discussion between the list team and approval from the list leader and admin team.
  • Any and all modes can be removed from the list by request from the games creator or team leader.
  • All modes are screened with the above eligibility requirements, and ranked on a logical-based system. This means new rankings will be judged based on the easiest possible way/strategy of beating a given mode. Modes with more RNG are tougher to rank in this case, therefore we may take extra time to ensure the accuracy of their ranking.
  • Utilizing in-game exploits and bugs to benefit a completion for a mode is allowed. HOWEVER, players are not allowed to perform AFK strategies that cause the player to sit actionless for the majority of the night without interruptions. Additionally, external clients, using CTRL + P, hacks or any other illegitimate programs are not allowed, and runs using them will not be accepted.

1.5. Multiplayer, VR Games, and Ports

  • We do not allow games that require 2 or more people to play at the same time, such as Multiplayer FNaF games like Forgotten Pizzeria.
  • This includes using external applications such as Parsec or Crowd Control for splitting control of an intentionally single player Max Mode.
  • VR Games are allowed on the Main List if they have a flat mode. If they don’t, then they can only be ranked on the Unlimited List.
  • Mobile-Only games are only allowed on the Unlimited List, as they don’t function the same or at all on PC.
  • Mobile and Console Ports of games already placed on either list are not ranked separately from other modes, and therefore are not ranked.

1.6. Modifications/Alterations/Remakes

  • The Max Mode List allows modifications/alterations/remakes of pre-existing games and fangames to be ranked. However, there are specific placement guidelines for modded modes that differ from base game requirements.
  • If a modification/alteration/remake is deemed too similar to a game already present on the list, it will not be allowed on the Main List, but may be allowed on the Unlimited List.
    • Too similar is in reference to mods that barely change a game’s core mechanics or general gameplay. For example, mods that uncap the AI levels of a pre-existing game are not allowed on either list. With the exception 50/50 Mode from UCN Unlimited, mods that alter the AI levels of a mode (ex. SL Aeez’s Mod Unnerfed 10/35 Mode), are not allowed to be placed.
  • Pre-Patch versions of mods are not allowed on either list.
  • Mods are much more susceptible to being blacklisted/removed from the list due to quality control; originality and unique changes to gameplay are to be expected when adding a mods mode to the list.

1.7. Hard Modes and Challenges

  • Hard Modes/All Challenge variants are allowed on both lists, but the rules for both vary a bit.
  • If a game contains challenges in addition to a Max Mode, but doesn’t give a reward in-game for beating it with said challenges, it is still allowed to be added to the list (ex: The Final Night All Challenges doesn’t give an in-game reward, but it is a Max Mode nonetheless).
  • Death Coins modes do NOT count as in-game challenges. Unless they grant a reward upon completion, they are not to be added to the list.
  • Hard Modes and Challenges are interchangeable, as they are both considered the “harder variant” of a Max Mode.

1.8. Game Updates

  • If a new update comes out for a game/mode that drastically changes the way the game is played, ALL previous records will be wiped, and new records will be implemented.
  • Drastic changes include major AI reworks, recodes, difficulty being altered to be higher or lower, and/or updated assets that impact the game’s difficulty or quality.
  • UL ONLY: A Pre-Patch entry of an updated game CAN be created if the mode ends up being significantly easier after the update, unless requested otherwise by the developer. Additionally, Pre-Patch entries cannot be created for any modifications/remakes/alterations of games by the developer. Additionally, Pre-Patch entries cannot be created for any modifications/remakes/alterations of games.

2. Submission Forms

2.1. “Submit Completions” Form Guidelines

  • General rules for submitting completions of Max Modes on the list includes these parameters:
  • You must include VIDEO PROOF of your completion. Simply saying that you have completed a MM will NOT get your record accepted. We also prefer if that video recording is at 60fps, since it helps us determine your record's validity more easily.
  • Unless you are unable to, we ask that you please submit completions through the Submit Completions Google form.
  • Please include the DATE of the completion. If you are unable to do so, we will still allow your record, but will use the date of the YouTube upload instead. This is especially important when a new Max Mode is released, since determining initial victors requires these specifications.
  • The video must be viewable without needing an account on the site it was posted on to view it. (ex: YouTube videos must be either Public or Unlisted, not Private; the BiliBili feature that prevents users from seeing video content unless they have an account MUST be turned off for the submission to be accepted.)
  • Any cheating or hacking methods are banned. This should be an obvious rule, but any splicing, speedhacks, godmode, etc. will disqualify your completion/progress. If you are caught doing anything suspicious in your recording/submission, you will gain 1 warning. If you do it again, you will be disqualified from participating in the list again, but your legitimate records will remain.
  • The Submit Completions Google form pertains to both the Main AND Unlimited lists. Your record will simply be added to the mode's respective page, even if that mode is only ranked on one of the lists.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If your mode is NOT in the top 150 of either list at the time of your submission, it will be disqualified. Additionally, if the mode you are submitting does not exist as an entry on the list, it will also be disqualified.

2.2. “Request Changes” Form Guidelines

  • Unless you are unable to, we ask that you please submit completions through the Request Changes Google form.
  • Simply put, please be professional about these requests.
  • If you are requesting an update to your time on a non time-based mode, please tell us your updated time, and send the updated video.
  • We will most likely contact you via discord after you submit your response unless the change is super minuscule, or you do not provide your discord tag. We take all submissions into account, even if your request will not be acted upon.

2.3. “Share Strategies” Form Guidelines

  • Unless you are unable to, we ask that you please submit completions through the Request Changes Google form.
  • The submission must be either a document, video, or any other type of media able to contain a guide/strategy. Please be professional about these requests.
  • If you would like us to change your link to your strategy submission (or name/game), please use the REQUEST CHANGES form, and request your change there.

3. Records and Eligibility

3.1. Video Content

  • The entire duration of a submission from the starting frame of the mode to the win screen must be captured on video, not just a few seconds or half the run. If this requirement is not met, you risk your submission being declined.
  • Any external client, hack, speed hack, altered MFA or unapproved build of an existing game, and/or plug-in that affects the gameplay in such a way that it differs even slightly from the original product will not be accepted. Usage of these types of programs may put you at risk of being banned from the Statistics Viewer.
  • Gameplay wise, any usage of AFK strategies are banned, and your record will not be accepted if you use them.
  • Splicing, heavily editing the winning run, stealing someone else’s completion for your own, distorting the audio, and cutting is not permitted at all on the leaderboard, and will put you at risk of being removed off the leaderboard
  • We typically consider a mode beaten when the 6 AM or win screen is triggered. Additionally, if a game bugs out and the player dies during the win screen and they don’t receive a reward for beating it (if the game gives one for said mode), the record will be invalid.

3.2. Eligibility of Tools

  • Usage of a timer app such as LiveSplit is allowed and encouraged to help for certain interval based modes.
  • Although some external programs are not allowed, there are certain approved modifications to games that are allowed to be used as tools for completing certain modes (as opposed to the base game). For example, Nephryte’s Sister Location Public Pre Patch is allowed to be used for a vanilla Golden Freddy completion.
    • NOTE: Usage of the built-in timer in this app and apps like it is not allowed, and will disqualify your record. This is because the base game does not contain a timer and therefore is considered a modification to the base game. Using an external app such as LiveSplit is allowed instead.
  • You must show proof that you are using an approved external application such as LiveSplit (or an alternative not mentioned here) in your video, either by writing or linking the program’s name in the description, or by showing it clearly in the completion video.

3.3. Framerate Guidelines

  • A recording must be taken at 60fps to be valid. If your recording is at 30fps, we may ask you to determine the FPS you were playing at during your submission.
  • If your submission utilizes a lower FPS to affect gameplay, then your submission will be rejected. In addition to a rejection, you will be warned or disqualified from the Stats Viewer, depending on the severity.

3.4. General Guidelines

  • A player may request the removal or addition of their records at any moment. To do so, use the Request Change form, or open a support ticket in the discord server.
  • Please note, if you repeatedly abuse this ability, you may be warned, punished, or permanently Blacklisted from submitting records to the Maxmodelist.
  • It may take the team upwards of a Month to verify a record. We have a relatively decent size team, however we all do this as volunteer work for fun, taking time from our daily lives, so we can’t always promise a quick verification.

4. Discord Server Rules

4.1. General Policy

  • The Maxmodelist Discord Server is a public space, meant to provide a safe and enjoyable location to discuss topics related to FNaF and the list. Everyone in this server falls under the same guidelines, and are treated equally. There are no exemptions for those with higher roles than Server Members.
  • Rules are subject to common sense. Avoid spamming, don’t ping team members unnecessarily, listen and respect the Admins, etc. Please be kind to others, and avoid starting fights.
  • Please communicate with Admins respectfully. Admins are here to help, but cannot do so without clear communication. We as Admins aim to provide our best input on various important ideas and discussions within the server and Maxmodelist as a whole.

4.2. Commitment to Respect

  • We understand that this server and the nature of Max Modes are competitive. However, users are not permitted to disrespect, exclude, harass, use slurs, attack, or target anyone in any negative light whatsoever. We promote good sportsmanship, not slander or hate. If a user is caught violating these rules, they will receive a warning.
  • Because of the nature of this server, it may be common to disagree with someone or something said. Please attempt to be mindful of others' opinions.

4.3. Explicit Content

  • Please do not post suggestive or NSFW content to this server. Violating this rule specifically will result in either a permanent warning or an instant ban, depending on the severity.
  • Discussions or conversations about NSFW or suggestive content is not allowed on this server. Users who violate this rule will be given a verbal or permanent warning, depending on the severity.

4.4. Controversial Content

  • Sharing one’s opinion is encouraged within this server, especially when related to FNaF, Max Modes, their placements, and other similar topics. However, please keep conversations away from potentially controversial subjects such as politics, religion, or anything else that could be considered as such. Instigating or partaking in a controversial discussion may result in a verbal or permanent warning being given.
  • Please refrain from bringing up past drama or controversy that has happened within the FNaF community or MML server. Instigating or partaking in the discussion of past drama may result in a verbal or permanent warning being given.

4.5. Channel Usage

  • Each channel is delegated to a specific use. Please try to keep conversations about certain topics in their specific chats.
  • Posting memes or gifs in non-meme chats are allowed to a certain degree.

4.6. Ticket and Form Support

  • Users may use the Ticket Support system in the server to directly communicate with admins about any concerns they may have about moderation or other server happenings. Please maintain civil discussion and discourse with the admins in these tickets. If you want to speak with a specific Admin, you can request them by pinging them in the ticket. Opening tickets for no reason may result in a verbal or permanent warning.

4.7. Discord Terms of Service

  • You must be at least 13 years old to use Discord. Raiding, illegal activities, attempting to obtain personal information, and all other prohibited acts will result in a permanent ban

4.8. Warns, Mutes, Kicks, and Bans

  • Admins and Mods have the right to stop behavior or discussion of certain topics that fall against the rules. If a rule is broken, it will generally result in a verbal warning. If the user fails to comply with the person who issues the warning, they will be given a permanent “warned” role. A server member can have up to 2 “warned” roles. If a member possesses 2 warned roles and breaks the rules again, they will be permanently banned from the server. We don't give second chances.

4.9. Info on the Server Teams

  • In the MML Discord server, we have 2 separate teams that overlap with each other for important matters regarding the list: the Server Team, and the List Team.
  • The Server Team is responsible for the upkeep of the server, moderation, and large scale events. This team consists of 3 major roles:
    • Server Leader - One of the figureheads and main decision makers of the server, and is the primary person responsible for managing the server. This role also includes the job responsibilities of the next 2 roles.
    • Server Admin - The team responsible for most moderation action within the server, as well as some list decisions. They are always available to discuss information about the list via the ticket system. There can be overlap with members of the List Team for this role. You must be at least a List Mod to gain this role, and be very active with lots of experience.
    • Server Moderator - A secondary moderation team responsible for general managing of the server. It mainly serves as a perms role, and provides people with access to some moderation powers. You do not need to be on the List Team at all to be a Server Mod.
  • The List Team is the team primarily responsible for the upkeep of the list itself, the website, verifying records, and the documents related to it. This team also consists of 3 major roles:
    • List Leader - One of the figureheads and main decision makers of the server, and is the primary person responsible for managing the list, website, and documents. This role also includes the job responsibilities of the next 2 roles.
    • List Editor - The team responsible for editing the list website, managing the documents and rankings, verifying records, and publishing updates to the changelog. You must be at least a List Mod to apply to be a List Editor. Additionally, you will only gain access to the documents or website IF you are a List Editor.
    • List Moderator - The main team responsible for discussing and assisting with anything related to the list, its rankings, and modes. This team specializes in discovering new modes, as well as playing and reporting back information and opinions about modes. A List Editor or Server Admin must be a List Mod to gain their role, meaning they must have experience working on the list to gain them.
  • All roles are to be expected to help out in various channels, especially #ask-mml-team. As for Server Admins, they are to be expected to help with responding to member tickets.
  • If a server or list team member leaves the MML discord server WITHOUT a specific designated reason of absence for a period of time exceeding 1 week, they will be unable to re-acquire their position on the team if they rejoin. Over time, a person may reapply, but they will not initially be able to.
  • Leaking images and chat messages from the admin only chat is punishable by permanent warning and a demotion from being an Admin. Punishments vary based on offense, but will always include demotion.

5. Miscellaneous

5.1. List Placement FAQ

  • Why is “x” mode not placed on the list?
    • Either the mode was deemed rejected based on the requirements above, or it was not difficult enough to be placed in the top 150.
  • Why are players allowed to submit a win for “[insert mode] with all challenges” for the same mode with no challenges?
    • We allow runs of modes with All Challenges or Hard Modes to be submitted for the same mode without challenges due to the normal mode being fundamentally the same mode, just with some tweaks or small additions. This prevents forcing the player to record and submit multiple runs for what is practically an easier version of the same mode.
